  • Scarborough Borough Council’s Planning and Development Committee will meet on Thursday 29 July to hear the planning applications for the three supermarket proposals for Whitby.   • In a deal aimed at ensuring the continuing delivery of The Sands project in Scarborough’s North Bay, experienced property developer Roland Duce has bought out Benchmark Leisure Limited.   • Whitby and Scarborough are both in the top five all-time favourite UK seaside resorts, according to new research by consumer champion Which? Holiday.   • Borough Mayor Cllr Hazel Lynskey and Whitby town Mayor Cllr Terry Jennison have opened an iconic new marina building in Whitby which will cater for hundreds of boat and yacht users.   • A miniature tank driving course is set to be created on the site of the former Atlantis waterpark in Scarborough’s North Bay.   • Recorded crime across Scarborough borough dropped again during the year 1 April 2009 to 31 March 2010. This is the fourth year in which crime reported to the Police in the borough has fallen. During the year the Police recorded 7,610 crimes, against 8,178, 8517 and 9001 in the three preceding years. more...

  • Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, will perform the official opening of the Open Air Theatre in Scarborough on the morning of Thursday 20 May. The Queen will unveil a plaque to mark the official opening of the theatre and will be treated to the borough's own Royal Variety Performance, ‘Grains of Sand’ written by Chris Darling and performed by Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre OutReach group. more...

  • The members of Whitby Rugby Club will be ‘dancing in the streets’ as Bill McLaren might have said, following completion of a long term lease of the clubhouse to Whitby Rugby Club.   • Scarborough Borough Council would like to remind dog owners that the seasonal restrictions allowing dogs on the main tourist beaches in the borough commences on Saturday 1 May. The restrictions, which prohibit dogs from certain stretches of beaches starts this weekend and lasts throughout the summer season until 30 September. more...

  • The town of Scarborough is amongst the first of the 16 towns/cities awarded the government’s new national 2005 Act Casino Licences to commence the process of inviting applications. In 2007 the government appointed a Casino Advisory Panel which identified Scarborough as one of eight local authority areas to host a 2005 Act Small Casino Licence. more...
